Commitment to Safety

Priority #1 for pet food companies is to make safe, nutritious food products for cats and dogs. Pet food companies follow an exhaustive list of procedures when making products in order to consistently meet this goal.

Safe and nutritious by design

Product safety begins before a product is ever made. Most pet foods are designed to provide complete and balanced nutrition for cats or for dogs, depending on the product. Because pet foods are fed every day, ensuring that products contain the right balance of nutrients is a matter of safety.

Pet food companies develop nutritious and tasty food for cats and dogs that contains the essential balance of nutrients. Products are tested to ensure they actually contain the right nutritional content, be it by feeding trial or nutrient analysis. Ingredients are carefully selected for inclusion in a product based upon the nutrients they contain and their functional properties.

Complete and balanced pet food, along with regular veterinary care, is an important part of promoting a long, healthy life for pets. Some pets may have a particular health issue that can be helped by a special diet. For these pets, a veterinarian may prescribe a therapeutic pet food.
